About Harpswood

Harpswood was set up by former national newspaper journalist James Clench to help businesses communicate effectively through the media.

We take great pride in the can-do attitude that exemplifies the agency. In practice that means: get the strategy right, then deliver, deliver, deliver.

We use clear language and never resort to jargon. We listen carefully to our clients so that we can understand where they are and where they want to be. We land their positive messages and help them navigate any issues.

Clients include global energy tech pioneer Octopus Energy – Britain’s fastest growing private company – Police Now, the social enterprise focused on increasing diversity in policing, and New AutoMotive, the transport research organisation supporting the switch to electric vehicles.

James spent 16 years as a reporter and news editor in national newspapers, including a period as head of news at The Sun.

As part of the paper’s graduate programme, James trained at City University – which houses one of the country’s leading journalism departments – the Press Association and the New York Post.

As a reporter, he covered stories from every continent before moving into a London-based news editing role for five years.

Before he launched Harpswood, James ran a successful business team at a top 20 independent agency where clients included global firms and dynamic, fast-growth startups in sectors including tech, energy, law, recruitment, health and travel.

James’s experience means he understands the news agenda, knows what journalists are looking for in a story and is skilled in writing compelling copy for clients. He has a strong network of media connections.
