HARPSWOOD WELCOMES DEMI ODULANA
Demi Odulana joined Harpswood this summer through the 10,000 Black Interns programme.
Its mission is to change the face of British business by placing black students in paid internships to help them realise their potential.
Companies participating include multinational corporations, public bodies and ambitious startups across sectors such as finance, tech and marketing.
Demi, an Exeter University business student, threw herself into Harpswood life. She quickly learned about PR and media, the demands of agency life, the rigours of client calls… and the lure of lunch in Spitalfields!
We asked her to reflect on her experience…
What attracted you to Harpswood?
I was particularly drawn to Harpswood’s ethos of working with businesses that have a positive impact on the community.
What do you feel you learned about PR?
I developed a more detailed understanding of the media - particularly of earned media - and also of promoting sustainable businesses
What’s your average day like?
No two days are the same - I’ve learned the agency juggle! I scan news sites and trade media to spot stories relevant to clients, draft pitches on their behalf, brainstorm ideas with the team and research potential new business opportunities. I’ve been able to develop my writing by putting together briefing notes and summarising webinars with senior national journalists.
What were your highlights?
Lunch times were amazing! I’d head into Spitalfields Market - right next door to the Harpswood office - grab some food and then eat with the team in the church yard. There’s always plenty of laughter, Harpswood is like a tight-knit family.
What did you learn about yourself?
I gained a clearer understanding of what I’m looking for in a career - and I developed business skills that are essential in the real world. That has definitely helped me feel more confident about life after university.
