OCTOPUS ENERGY US

launching our us office for octopus

BRIEF

In 2023, Octopus asked us to manage PR for the US arm of the business. Our Director Abi spent a month in Texas getting to know the team, meeting key local media and hired a former news anchor to supercharge media relations.

By combining boots on the ground support with the support of our UK team, we’re firmly establishing US CEO Michael Lee as the media’s go-to energy expert and cementing Octopus’s position stateside as challenger business with a huge global footprint behind it.

APPROACH

We hit the ground running with Reactive newsjacking and proactive commentary during weather events that impact the electricity grid. We’ve also been Building relationships with leading energy and climate journalists to deliver standout in-depth national coverage.

RESULTS

Octopus Energy’s US arm of the business is a fraction of the UK operation, but this hasn’t stopped us from delivering a sweep of national coverage.

  • We landed over 20 interviews and office visits with the likes of Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, The FT and Reuters within the first six months of working together.

  • We worked closely with a climate reporter at The Washington Post to deliver a detailed article on grid flexibility that showcased an Octopus customer case study who sells their energy back to the grid.

  • CEO Michael Lee is becoming a ‘go-to’ expert commentator on energy stories for local, regional and national journalists. A major win was seeing Michael quoted first in a New York Times piece on Texas’ move to renewable energy.

  • Broadcast interviews on the likes of KCBD - the region’s most watched news channel - gave Michael the chance to discuss Octopus Energy’s expansion into Lubbock and how it benefits customers.

  • We’ve also supported the Octopus US and UK teams at Climate Week NYC securing further high-profile journalist meets.
